Workshop Location
The workshop will be held in St. Johnsville, New York, in the Mohawk Valley near the beautiful Adirondack Mountains region. Lodging and travel information will be provided with confirmations. The location is approximately 90 minutes from Albany, NY by car.

Workshop Description
This workshop offers a second-level training in Animal Assisted Play Therapy. Dog training sessions with your own dog will occur in segments throughout the workshop, with resting periods for the dogs at other times. Lectures, videos, discussions, and planning sessions will occur between the dog training segments. Role-plays of actual play sessions will include your own dogs or a demo dog, as well as Suzanne's horses, donkeys, and other animals.

Participants will learn effective dog handling skills relevant to therapy work, as well as how to (a) develop a strong and mutual relationship with their dogs, (b) train their dogs for play therapy work using positive methods, (c) plan, train, and implement a variety of dog tricks or games for play therapy, (d) facilitate nondirective and directive play therapy sessions with dogs and/or horses, (e) debrief children and groups after AAPT activities, (f) develop effective risk-management policies, (g) read and react to canine signaling as it occurs during play sessions, (h) link AAPT interventions with therapeutic goals, (i) promote the use of AAPT, and (j) resolve common difficulties in the professional practice of AAPT. The workshop will also provide ample opportunity for participants to discuss their progress and obstacles in the use of AAPT to date and to resolve common problems.

This course has limited enrollment for people and their dogs. Upon registration, a listing of resource materials will be suggested for preparation. Dogs must meet the requirements below. If there are questions about this, please contact Dr. VanFleet via email at risevanfleet@aol.com.

Prerequisites - HUMAN & DOG!!
Participants should have attended the four-day Animal Assisted Play Therapy Training Course and read the required materials (list to be sent). Dogs must be well-behaved, non-aggressive around other dogs, and socialized well with a variety of people, dogs, and situations. Please discuss any questions or problems with Dr. VanFleet at the time you register.

Who Should Attend
This training is for psychologists, social workers, counselors, psychiatrists, family therapists, school counselors, and other experienced mental health, medical, or educational professionals who work with children and families and who have an interest in AAPT. Canine and equine professionals who meet the prerequisites are also welcomed.

We are committed to making workshops accessible to everyone. Please contact us if you have special needs. Training is held on a farm with contact with dogs, horses, and other animals.

Schedule
The training will run from 9:00 to 5:30 each day.

Continuing Education
The Family Enhancement & Play Therapy Center is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The FEAPT Center maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. The Family Enhancement & Play Therapy Center is approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors (5732) to offer continuing education credits to counselors. The FEAPT Center follows all CE guidelines. It is also an Association for Play Therapy (APT) Approved Provider 95-014. This program has been approved by a number of state social work boards (please contact us for this info). 28 continuing education credits will be awarded to participants who attend the entire training. Partial credit cannot be given. No exceptions can be made to this policy.

Dress
The training will involve work with dogs and horses in a farm environment, including outdoors. Please dress comfortably with this in mind. Rain gear and footwear for muddy areas are also advised.

Risë VanFleet, Ph.D., RPT-S, CDBC is a licensed Psychologist, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with 35 years of clinical and leadership experience in a variety of settings. She is the president of the Family Enhancement & Play Therapy Center, Inc. in Boiling Springs, PA. She is a Past President/Board Chair of the Association for Play Therapy. She has authored numerous books and chapters on play therapy and Filial Therapy, and is featured on 4 DVDs. Risë has trained thousands worldwide, and she has received 6 prestigious awards for her training and writing. Dr. VanFleet is the author of the groundbreaking and award-winning book, Play Therapy with Kids & Canines, and articles and chapters on AAPT. She is an Approved Evaluator with the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizenâ Program, a full member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers , the Dog Writers Association of America, and the International Society for Anthrozoology. She is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. She is the Director of the Playful Pooch Program.

 

Kirrie is a trained play therapy dog. She is an 8-year-old rescued Border Collie-Hound mix. Kirrie will assist with the workshop, and other dogs will be available for work during the training as well.

 

Suzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977, with a deep and varied background of experience. She is well-respected for her holistic, Relationship Centered Dog Training™ to dogs and the people who love them. Suzanne has taught throughout the world, and her acclaimed book, Bones Would Rain from the Sky, has twice been included in the Wall Street Journal's list of Top 5 Dog Books. She is an award-winning author of videos, books, booklets and numerous articles, having written for many major dog magazines throughout the world. She has served as a consultant to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, one of the world's largest guide dog schools. She has developed the Clothier Animal Response Assessment Tool and the Relationship Assessment Tool, both of which are likely to be used as part of the AAPT credential. A German Shepherd breeder for over 24 years, her Hawks Hunt German Shepherds have been successful in obedience, agility, search and rescue, herding, and therapy work.

Fees
Extra Early Bird fee: $800 (fully paid by Oct 15, 2011)
Early Bird fee: $885 (paid Oct 15 - Jan 10, 2012)
Regular fee: $985 (after Jan 10, 2012)

Registration fees include workshop handouts and materials, continental breakfast, light lunch, and beverages.

Cancellation Policy
$150 of the registration fee is nonrefundable. Registrations are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Fees include 4 days of training, handout book, light breakfast and lunch. Dinners are on your own.

The $150 deposit is nonrefundable. Written cancellations received 16 weeks prior to the training will receive a full refund of the balance of the fees. Cancellations received within 16 weeks of the training are subject to an additional $150 processing fee, with the remainder being refunded.

We regret that no refunds can be given within the 10 weeks preceding the training. When someone from the waiting list can substitute, credit toward future trainings may be given.
