Workshop Description:
This workshop explores the importance of “play” in play therapy
through a series of brief lectures, videos, and experiential activities. First,
participants examine the value of play through examples in the natural world
(e.g., animal play and cross-species play) as well as human play in different
cultures and through history. The implications of this strong, natural “drive
to play” are evaluated from multidisciplinary perspectives for the practice
of play therapy. Play therapy dogs will be on-site to illustrate the use of
animals in conjunction with play therapy. Next, participants experience “play
therapy through the arts.” This segment shows participants how to integrate
play therapy with various expressive and artistic media. Finally, participants
will explore the stages and purposes of children’s play development,
using play therapy methods appropriate for each. Creativity, spontaneity,
and playfulness in play therapy are emphasized through many experiential activities
during the week-long training program.
Participants in this training will learn how to. . .
. . . talk in an informed way with other professionals and parents about the value of play and play therapy, based on current multidisciplinary research
. . . incorporate artistic and natural media fully into their play therapy
. . . conduct new play therapy interventions matched to children’s overall developmental level & stage of play development
. . . enhance their own playfulness & creativity in play therapy

Weather:
The weather on the Outer Banks can be variable at this time of year, but is
generally very good. Daily temperature highs range from the 60s to the
90s. During previous years, we had sunny, warm days in the 80s, with
just a couple days of drizzle or rain. The ocean temperature is brisk,
but usually warm enough for swimming. Although we can't guarantee the
weather, it should be warm and nice while we're there. More detailed
information about attire is included with confirmation packets.
