About the Workshop:
The demand for training in Filial Therapy is growing rapidly due to its increased
visibility, effectiveness, and positive research history. This 30-hour advanced
workshop is designed for Filial Therapists who wish to train other mental
health professionals in Filial Therapy. Participants will learn the curriculum
for the Intensive Filial Therapy Training Program and how to conduct it, including
how to organize and market the training, how to use the workshop materials,
and principles and skills of good training leadership. Training group management
and feedback processes to ensure trainee success are also emphasized.
Participants will practice a variety of instructor skills, including brief lecture, introduction/discussion of case studies and videos, role play demonstrations, spontaneous demonstrations, providing individualized skill feedback, balancing focus and flexibility, and managing group processes. Common training problems and how to handle them are also discussed and practiced. This workshop is largely experiential, involving significant amounts of skill practice with individualized feedback. The workshop content and training methods represent parallel processes of the Filial Therapy model. This workshop provides the instructor training requirement for the Filial Therapy Instructor Certification.
Prerequisite Training:
Participants should have attended the Intensive Filial Therapy Training Program
(or its equivalent) and should have conducted Filial Therapy with at least
10 families. If you have received your Filial Therapy training at an organization
other than the Family Enhancement & Play Therapy Center, please call Dr.
VanFleet to determine if you meet this prerequisite. Although it is useful
if you’ve already attended the Advanced Filial Therapy training, it
is not a prerequisite for this training. If you have any other questions about
these prerequisites, please call Dr. VanFleet at 717-249-4707.
Training Methods:
The Filial Therapy Instructor Training Program is limited to 6 participants
to permit extensive skill practice with individualized coaching & feedback.
Dr. Van Fleet will present brief lectures, demonstrations, case examples,
and supervision/feedback to participants as they practice during role plays.
Ample time is allotted for questions and discussions.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to…
• Describe the training model used for Filial Therapy training programs, and how it represents a parallel process to the parent training used in FT.
• Explain to training participants all of the primary didactic material about FT.
• Conduct the skill practice portions of the Intensive Filial Therapy Training Program.
• Conduct, at least as a cotrainer, the entire Intensive Filial Therapy Training Program.
• Describe at least 2 basic training group problems that can arise and how to handle them.
